Censorship in Social Media

The ever-growing knowledge and experience with social media is a whole new adventure for us all. Just because you know how to submit a photo to your Facebook account or a video to YouTube, do you really know what you are doing? Do you know where you are submitting these to? Do you know who you are submitting them to?

The appropriately titled article Don’t Touch My Junk: Who Owns This Social Media Sh#t Anyway? http://manishin.com/law/?p=2167 Discusses the The Law of Social Media (Part V) pertaining to copyright and content ownership in social media. Included in the article is a video presentation by Glenn Manishin.

One of my favorite points made in this video is entitled “If You Give It Away, You Don’t Own It.” Simply put, once you posts pictures, videos, etc.. to social media platforms under public view you are GIVING it away to the world. You must be very strategic in your posts and only allow your work to be viewed publicly of you are willing to let it be used by others without your permission or if you take precautions and copywrite your work in a correct and appropriate manner. Don’t sell yourself short and let someone else profit off of you because you didn’t know the law.
