Top Social Media Threats

When you use social media platforms, do you really know what you are getting into? Sometimes we as common consumers do not understand the behind the scenes negativity and scandal when it comes to a product (Facebook, Twitter) we have adapted to using on a daily basis. Now think about an entire enterprise relying on its employees to appropriately use all platforms, keep profiles private, avoid saying or posting anything offensive to an overly offended generation. It’s practically impossible, especially when you don’t understand what’s happening. According to the article, “5 Top Social Media Threats,” Chris Nerney discusses why the following are top threats you may not have known existed:

Cell Phone Apps-When you download an App to your phone, do you read the long agreement before accepting the download? You should. Google recently removed 60 Apps from its store because they had been offered with the intent of installing malicious software in users phones without their knowledge. You downloaded it, you got it.

Social Engineering-Those “friends” of ours trying to accept funds to help the homeless or save the animals. Sign-up and submit your credit card information and receive a free T-shirt. No. The homeless are not being saved and your bank account is now empty. Oh, there’s no shirt coming either, but good thing they have your address now to verify your credit card when they use it.

Social Networking-Have you ever been on your social media page and you see an add that keeps popping up and you decide to click on it just this once. That’s all it takes, once. Coders inject spyware and steal your personal information off of your computer within seconds. My 19 year old sister knows how to get your social security number from the comfort of her home if you have even one time input it on your computer. Just think, tax forms anyone?

These threats along with others can be found in Nerney’s article at https://www.networkworld.com/article/2177520/5-top-social-media-security-threats.html

This is just the tip of the iceberg. Be aware of your social surroundings just as much as your social media surroundings.
